Day 1 – Arrive in Mauritius & Check into Lagoon Attitude
After arriving at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, we headed to Lagoon Attitude, where we'd be staying for the week. Free airport transportation was included in the stay, which we were thankful for, after travelling on such a long flight.
The hotel exceeded our expectations. The beachfront location was stunning, the food was excellent, and every member of staff made us feel incredibly welcome from the moment we arrived.
One thing you'll notice straight away is the strong French influence throughout Mauritius. Breakfast each morning featured freshly baked pastries, artisan breads, cheeses and cured meats, giving every day a relaxed European feel.
After our journey, we spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the beach before enjoying dinner overlooking the lagoon – the perfect start to our Mauritian adventure.
Day 2 – Exploring Port Louis
We hired a car and drove into Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius.
As we visited on a Sunday, the famous Central Market was closed, making the city much quieter than expected. If you're hoping to experience the bustling markets, we'd definitely recommend visiting on a weekday instead.
For lunch, we stopped at Ocean Basket Port Louis, where we ordered the seafood platter. The seafood was incredibly fresh, the portions were generous, and it was easily one of our favourite meals of the trip. If you're a seafood lover, this restaurant is well worth adding to your itinerary.
Day 3 – Hiking Le Morne & Lunch at Chez Bhim
One of the highlights of our trip was hiking Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO World Heritage Site offering some of the most spectacular views in Mauritius.
We chose to hike to the halfway viewpoint, which we found to be the perfect balance of effort and reward. The panoramic views across the turquoise lagoon and surrounding coastline were absolutely breathtaking and more than worth the climb.
If you're an experienced and confident hiker, you can continue to the summit. Be aware that the final section becomes much steeper and requires scrambling over rocks, with the use of your hands in places. This section is recommended only for experienced hikers with a good level of fitness.
After the hike, we stopped for lunch at Chez Bhim in La Gaulette. This small, family-run restaurant serves authentic homemade Mauritian food in a welcoming atmosphere. The food was fresh, full of flavour and felt like a genuine local experience. We'd highly recommend stopping here after your hike.
Day 4 – Chamarel & the Seven Coloured Earth
One of Mauritius' most unique natural attractions is the Seven Coloured Earth in Chamarel.
The naturally coloured sand dunes, formed by volcanic activity, create an extraordinary landscape unlike anywhere else in the world and are well worth the drive.
While you're in the area, we'd also recommend visiting:
- Chamarel Waterfall
- Ebony Forest Reserve
- A local rum distillery to sample some of Mauritius' famous rum
Together, these attractions make for an excellent day trip through one of the island's most scenic regions.
Day 5 – Dolphin Watching in Tamarin
We booked a private boat tour to experience one of Mauritius' most popular activities—seeing wild dolphins.
We drove to Tamarin early in the morning for our 9:00 am departure, but first stopped at Bakery 1 for breakfast. There was already a long queue of locals waiting for it to open, which is always a good sign. After tasting the warm pastries and freshly baked bread, it was easy to understand why. We'd highly recommend stopping here before your boat trip.
From there, it was just a short drive to Black River, where our boat departed.
We specifically chose a private tour rather than a larger group excursion, and we're so glad we did. The larger boats looked quite crowded, and the experience seemed to focus solely on dolphin watching.
Our private tour gave us much more flexibility. After seeing the dolphins, we were able to go snorkelling, explore quieter parts of the coastline and even stop at a beautiful beach—experiences that many of the group tours don't include.
If your budget allows, we'd definitely recommend choosing a private boat tour for a much more personal and relaxed experience.
Day 6 – Kayaking & A Perfect Final Evening
Before our final full day came to an end, we joined one of the complimentary guided kayak tours offered by Lagoon Attitude.
Our guide explained how the island was formed through volcanic activity, pointed out local wildlife and shared fascinating facts about the surrounding lagoon. After the guided section, we were free to paddle around and explore at our own pace, making it a peaceful and enjoyable way to spend the morning.
That evening, we enjoyed dinner at one of the hotel's excellent restaurants before finishing the trip with live music. The singer happily took requests and performed an eclectic mix of songs, creating the perfect atmosphere for our final night in Mauritius.
Day 7 – Last Morning Before Flying Home
Before heading to the airport, spend your final morning relaxing on the beach or picking up a few souvenirs to remember your trip.
Looking back, Mauritius exceeded every expectation. From hiking Le Morne and swimming with dolphins to discovering incredible local food and relaxing on pristine beaches, every day offered something different.
It's a destination that perfectly combines adventure, natural beauty, culture and relaxation - and somewhere we'd happily return to in the future.
